Understanding Human Attachment
At its core, human attachment is about survival. From birth, our brains are wired to connect with others, especially caregivers. Our survival depends on these connections. Attachment goes beyond love; it’s about safety. The brain’s primary job is to keep us alive. One effective way it does this is by forming strong emotional bonds with those who can protect us.
In a perfect world, we would all grow up with caregivers who are emotionally attuned, responsive, and consistently available. These caregivers would meet our physical needs (like food and shelter) and our emotional needs (like comfort and validation). Unfortunately, reality often falls short.
Many, especially those born before the millennial generation, did not grow up in emotionally aware households. Previous generations often believed that meeting a child's emotional needs was unnecessary or even harmful. As a result, many adults today carry unmet emotional needs from childhood. They may struggle with feeling seen, validated, or safe in relationships. Deep down, they long for the unconditional acceptance they never received.
This emotional “hunger” makes us vulnerable, especially when something or someone appears to offer the safety and support we’ve been missing.
The Allure of AI Companionship
Artificial intelligence, particularly AI bots that use natural language processing, have become surprisingly adept at mimicking secure attachment. They listen, don’t interrupt, and don’t judge. They validate your emotions and are always available. This mirrors what a securely attached and emotionally available parent should provide.
For individuals who have never known consistent support, especially those with an anxious attachment style, AI can feel like a lifeline. The same applies to people with an avoidant attachment style, who are sensitive to criticism and feelings of inadequacy. With AI, there’s no fear of judgment. They won’t criticize, reject, or make you feel inadequate.
Anxiously attached individuals often struggle to self-regulate. They rely on external regulators, usually other people, to calm their nervous systems. When overwhelmed, anxious, or emotionally dysregulated, they look to someone else for comfort. AI, in its current form, functions as an external regulator. It’s always there, soothing, and never creates emotional chaos.
AI can offer the emotional safety that many lacked in childhood, which is critical for healing insecure attachment. A key part of that healing process involves being with securely attached individuals, including partners who provide a stable, secure space. On paper, this sounds like a perfect match.
In practice, however, it’s far more complicated.
The Problem with AI “Relationships”
Here’s the harsh truth: AI cannot love you. It cannot hold you accountable. It cannot challenge you, set boundaries, or disappoint you in the way that humans inevitably will. And that’s a problem.
True emotional growth happens in the messy parts of human relationships. It’s in the ruptures and repairs, misunderstandings and apologies, tough conversations, and uncomfortable silences. AI doesn’t do any of that. It doesn’t say, “Hey, what you said hurt me.” It doesn’t withdraw or shut down when you cross a line. It doesn’t need anything from you in return.
While an AI companion may feel safe and secure, it doesn’t teach you how to meet the needs of another person. It doesn’t model mutuality, reciprocity, or emotional risk—all core elements of secure human connection.
What we’re left with is a one-sided dynamic that feels comforting but ultimately reinforces emotional dependency, especially for those predisposed to anxious or avoidant patterns. This is a significant portion of the population.
The Risk of Replacing Human Connection
Human beings are wired to connect with other humans. We are biologically, emotionally, and socially driven to form community bonds. That’s not speculation; it’s evolutionary fact. For centuries, we’ve survived and thrived not as individuals but as part of interconnected networks.
AI, no matter how intelligent or responsive, cannot replace that.
Relying on AI for emotional fulfillment can stunt our ability to build and maintain real-world relationships. It may feel easier and safer, but that safety is artificial. The longer we avoid the discomfort of human connection, the harder it becomes to engage authentically.
The long-term consequence is a growing emotional dependency on something that cannot truly relate back. For individuals with insecure attachment patterns—whether anxious, avoidant, or disorganized—AI can reinforce existing defenses. Anxiously attached individuals may become more reliant on instant validation without learning to self-soothe or tolerate emotional uncertainty. Avoidantly attached individuals may lean further into emotional isolation, finding AI “safer” than real people who require presence, effort, and accountability.
As this dynamic becomes normalized, we risk creating a society where emotional safety is outsourced to machines, while real human connection becomes more foreign, uncomfortable, and ultimately avoidable.
If we engage primarily with AI companions that exist to meet our needs without requiring us to consider theirs, it subtly reinforces a one-sided model of relating. Over time, this can normalize a relational dynamic where empathy, compromise, and attunement to another person’s inner world become irrelevant. The result? A growing inability, or even unwillingness, to tolerate discomfort, difference, or emotional responsibility.
In this sense, it can foster traits that mirror narcissistic tendencies: self-centeredness, emotional entitlement, and a distorted belief that relationships should always be convenient, validating, and on our terms. It’s not necessarily about people becoming diagnosably narcissistic, but rather about cultivating a worldview where relational mutuality is devalued. Relationships, by nature, are messy, demanding, and beautifully imperfect. If AI teaches us to expect seamless connection without emotional effort, we risk losing the very skills that make human connection meaningful. That’s a quiet, long-term danger we can’t afford to ignore.
Moving Forward: Embracing Genuine Connection
To be clear, there are potential benefits to AI mimicking secure attachment, especially for those who have never experienced it. It may serve as a therapeutic bridge, allowing individuals to get a taste of validation and understanding.
However, this is not a replacement for human intimacy. It’s a stepping stone, not the destination.
If you find yourself feeling more connected to your AI than to the people in your life, it’s worth exploring what needs are being met by that interaction and which ones are still being avoided. True healing happens in connection, but it requires vulnerability, effort, and risk.
The goal is not just to feel safe; it’s to be safe with others and to offer that safety in return.
At the end of the day, no matter how intelligent AI becomes, it cannot replace the healing power of genuine human connection.
